Port Stephens Wedding Venues Guide

Introduction

As a wedding hair and makeup artist who travels to Port Stephens all season, I get asked constantly which venues I'd recommend, so here are eight of my favourites, from marina resorts in Corlette to a heritage homestead at Tanilba Bay and a rustic barn in the hinterland. I work as a mobile hair and makeup artist across the whole region, and every property here has its own rhythm for the morning of your wedding: how far I need to travel, whether accommodation is available on-site, and how much time your getting-ready schedule really needs.

Wherever your Port Stephens wedding is booked, this guide should help you picture the morning before you even get there.

Venue 01/08  —  Corlette

Anchorage Hotel & Spa

Anchorage Hotel & Spa

Marina resort · day spa on-site

Anchorage sits directly on the marina at Corlette, a resort-style property with five flexible event spaces suited to anything from an intimate sit-down to a 150-guest cocktail reception. With a day spa, two restaurants and multiple pools on-site, it's built for couples who want their whole wedding weekend, not just the ceremony, to feel considered.

Because Anchorage has its own resort accommodation, your bridal party can get ready in one room without any travel on the morning itself. The on-site spa is also worth knowing about if you want to build a slower, more indulgent start into your day.

It's about five minutes from Nelson Bay township, so if you want a coffee run or a change of scenery for portraits, everything you need is close by.

Getting-Ready Tip

Book a room large enough for your whole bridal party to get ready together. I complete everyone's hair and makeup in the one space. I take groups of 2 to 10, bringing one additional artist for 4 to 6 and two for 7 to 10, so a roomier suite makes for a calmer morning.

Venue 02/08  —  Shoal Bay

Shoal Bay Country Club

Shoal Bay Country Club

Beachfront · up to 300 guests

Shoal Bay Country Club sits directly on Shoal Bay Beach, with the Whitesands space seating up to 180 for a formal dinner or 300 for a cocktail-style reception, one of the largest capacities in Port Stephens. It suits couples who want an established, easy-to-plan beachfront wedding with a proven team behind it.

Accommodation is available through the adjoining Ramada Resort, so your bridal party can stay the night before and walk to your getting-ready location without any early-morning driving. Ceremony spots are just a short stroll from the reception space itself.

Shoal Bay is around five minutes from Nelson Bay, which makes it an easy base for guests who want to explore the wider Port Stephens area before or after your wedding.

Getting-Ready Tip

Beachfront weddings mean beachfront humidity. I use long-wear, weather-resistant products for every Shoal Bay bride so your hair and makeup hold from the ceremony through to your last dance.

Venue 03/08  —  Fingal Bay

Saltwater Restaurant

Saltwater Restaurant

Elevated oceanfront · seats up to 150

Saltwater sits above the Fingal Bay Surf Life Saving Club, with floor-to-ceiling windows looking straight over Fingal Beach and the sand spit toward Fingal Island. It's one of the more dramatic settings in Port Stephens, seating up to 150 for dinner or 170 cocktail-style, with a private open-air balcony for your ceremony.

Saltwater doesn't have accommodation on-site, so I always recommend booking a stay in Fingal Bay, Nelson Bay or Shoal Bay the night before. A short-stay rental or Airbnb in the immediate area works just as well, and keeps your morning close to the venue. Your hair and makeup is completed in full at that address, and I'm finished once you and your party are ready.

Fingal Bay is about 10 to 15 minutes past Nelson Bay township, so it's worth building the extra distance into your morning timeline, especially if your ceremony is early.

Getting-Ready Tip

Since Saltwater has no on-site rooms, confirm your nearby accommodation early. Fingal Bay's short-stay houses book out fast in wedding season, and I'll need to know where I'm setting up before I quote your travel time.

Venue 04/08  —  Tanilba Bay

Tanilba House

Tanilba House

Heritage 1831 homestead · gardens

Tanilba House is a convict-built stone homestead dating back to 1831, set on three acres of gardens overlooking Port Stephens on the western shore. A 35 to 40 metre floral arbour, a fig-tree 'cathedral' and the property's gaol ruins give it more history and character than almost anywhere else on this list. It seats up to 70 guests, making it one of the more intimate Port Stephens venues.

Tanilba House includes two hours of complimentary early access to the maids quarters, a small space that sleeps up to four, worth knowing about when you're deciding where your bridal party gets ready. For larger parties, I'd recommend organising a nearby accommodation or Airbnb instead, so your whole hair and makeup service can happen together in one place.

Being on the western shore, Tanilba House is one of the closer Port Stephens venues to Newcastle, which means a slightly earlier, calmer start to your morning than the venues further out toward Nelson Bay.

Getting-Ready Tip

With only two hours of complimentary early access, I plan your Tanilba House timeline tightly. Let me know your full bridal party size early so I can confirm whether we need extra time booked in advance.

Venue 05/08  —  Anna Bay

The Oasis Weddings and Events

The Oasis Weddings and Events

9 eco cabins · 5-acre tropical forest

The Oasis sits about 600 metres from One Mile Beach, a five-acre property of tropical melaleuca forest built around a billabong, with an all-weather reception room where the forest seems to grow straight through the ceiling. Exclusive-use packages cover up to 100 guests, with ceremony seating for around 40.

Nine self-contained eco cabins sleep up to 50 across the property, with two nights' accommodation included in most wedding packages, which means your entire bridal party, and often your guests too, can stay on-site for the whole weekend. That kind of setup makes for one of the calmest wedding mornings I work.

It's under ten minutes to Nelson Bay from The Oasis, so day guests staying elsewhere in Port Stephens have an easy drive in for the ceremony.

Getting-Ready Tip

With most of your bridal party staying in the eco cabins, I build a relaxed, unhurried morning into your Oasis timeline. I take groups of 2 to 10, with one additional artist for 4 to 6 and two for 7 to 10, so a bigger group staying over doesn't mean a rushed morning.

Venue 06/08  —  Bobs Farm

Sunset+Vine at Wonganella Estate

Sunset+Vine at Wonganella Estate

Hilltop vineyard · Barrel Room reception

Sunset+Vine sits on a hilltop at Wonganella Estate in Bobs Farm, with ceremony options among the vines, on a sunset deck, or overlooking Tilligerry Creek, and reception in the property's Barrel Room. It's one of the more distinctive vineyard settings this side of the Hunter, with capacity for up to 125 guests.

The estate offers accommodation on-site, which is worth asking about directly when you enquire, since it makes a genuine difference to how early and how calmly your hair and makeup morning can start. Being midway between Salt Ash and Nelson Bay on Nelson Bay Road, it sits at a convenient middle point for guests coming from either direction.

If on-site accommodation isn't available for your date, I'll work with you to organise a nearby stay instead, so your whole hair and makeup service still happens in one place before you head to the vines.

Getting-Ready Tip

Confirm your Sunset+Vine accommodation booking early when you enquire. Staying on the estate the night before makes for a noticeably calmer morning than driving in from Newcastle.

Venue 07/08  —  Anna Bay

The Retreat Port Stephens

The Retreat Port Stephens

Sand dune backdrop · accommodates 91

The Retreat backs onto the largest living sand dunes in the Southern Hemisphere, a bushland property with an indoor multi-purpose room seating up to 100 and full exclusive-use packages that include two nights' accommodation for up to 91 guests. It's a genuinely private, whole-property setting for couples who want their guest list staying together for the weekend.

Because The Retreat operates as a bring-your-own-catering venue with exclusive accommodation included, most brides here are already staying on-site the morning of the wedding, which means I complete your whole hair and makeup service exactly where you slept, with no travel to add to the timeline.

The dune backdrop is one of the more striking natural settings in Port Stephens, and it's worth discussing with your photographer early when planning your portraits.

Getting-Ready Tip

With exclusive use of the property, I can usually get your whole bridal party ready in one room without any scheduling around other guests. I take groups of 2 to 10, bringing one additional artist for 4 to 6 and two for 7 to 10. Mention your numbers when you enquire so I can plan the morning properly.

Venue 08/08  —  Eagleton

The Barn, Port Stephens Hinterland

The Barn, Port Stephens Hinterland

85-acre farm · closest to Newcastle

The Barn sits on more than 85 acres of farmland at Eagleton, in the Port Stephens hinterland rather than on the coast strip, with unrestricted access across the property for ceremony and photo locations. It suits a rustic, relaxed wedding for up to 90 guests, with Argentinian parilla-style barbecue catering as part of the experience.

Being inland at Eagleton, The Barn is the closest Port Stephens venue to Newcastle on this list: about 30 minutes from the city and 25 from Williamtown Airport, which keeps my travel time down and gives your morning a little extra breathing room.

On-site accommodation is limited to a three-bedroom cottage sleeping six, with glamping options for a larger group staying over. For a larger bridal party, I'd recommend booking a single nearby stay in Raymond Terrace or further into Port Stephens instead, so everyone can get ready together in the one place.

Getting-Ready Tip

If your bridal party is larger than the cottage sleeps, confirm your nearby group accommodation early. I complete everyone's hair and makeup in a single location, so it's worth booking somewhere with enough room for the whole party.

ON THE DAY: How I Plan It

How I plan your Port Stephens wedding morning

Every venue on this list has its own drive time and rhythm, but the planning behind your hair and makeup morning stays largely the same. Once your date is confirmed, I send a personalised timeline built around your ceremony time, your bridal party size, and how far I need to travel to reach you, whether that's Corlette, Nelson Bay, Anna Bay or the hinterland.

A $120 travel fee applies to all Port Stephens bookings, quoted upfront in your written contract with no surprises added later. If your venue sits further out toward Fingal Bay or Anna Bay, I'll usually recommend an earlier call time, or staying nearby the night before, so your morning isn't rushed by a long drive.

Most Port Stephens brides book their hair and makeup preview at my Estillo studio in Cardiff, about an hour from most Port Stephens venues, a relaxed, unhurried session to find your look before the day itself. If you already know your venue from this list, mention it when you enquire and I'll factor the specifics: accommodation, ceremony time, guest numbers, straight into your quote.
